Types of Therapy

The treatment of anxiety, nervous symptoms and even habits is a skilled professional job, only to be undertaken by a suitably qualified practitioner. Academic degrees and diplomas, though necessary, are not sufficient by themselves. The therapist must also have real experience, warmth and compassion, and intuitive sense!

I have gained expertise in a number of different styles of therapy, which I apply singly or in combination to the client's difficulties. The following is a brief overview of the types of therapy:

SUGGESTION THERAPY

A traditional treatment used to help with problems, such as nail biting, pre-test nerves, pain etc. It makes use of the mind's heightened susceptibility to suggestions in order to make changes. This type of therapy generally requires one to two sessions.

QUIT SMOKING SESSION

Includes suggestion therapy, but also involves counselling and education around smoking. To quit smoking usually requires an free initial half-hour session and a single 2-hour session.

SOLUTION-BASED THERAPY

The most recent addition to the armoury of techniques available to us to help with a wide range of symptoms. Solution-based therapy helps people achieve what they want to achieve in life. This may be simple relief from symptoms, a successful relationship, or other goal. It works by awakening the person's full potential, abilities and choices.

The principle: It is the mind that creates the problem, and the mind that continues it, but it is also the mind that can end the problem. Solution-based therapy brings about a change of mind that releases the person to happiness.

Solution-based therapy is especially helpful with confidence and self-esteem problems, and change can often be achieved very quickly. It is now recognised as one of the most successful interventions in the treatment of depression and anxiety, and is effective in panic attacks, phobias, obsessions and trauma (including PTSD). This kind of therapy usually requires between 3 and 10 sessions.

Included in solution-based therapy are Ericksonian techniques of metaphor and language patterns, and neuro-linguistic programming, such as the new 'fast phobia cure'.

HYPNOANALYSIS

Remains the most common form of treatment for anxiety and nervous (neurotic) disorders. It works on the principle that every effect has a cause. Hypnoanalysis aims to reveal and treat the root cause of the symptoms.

An emotional event in childhood may continue to exert an unwanted effect in the present. The event may have been forgotten, but the person experiences symptoms. There may by physical symptoms for which the doctor can find no apparent cause. There may be anxiety, phobias or difficulties with relationships.

The analytical process uses hypnosis to aid the recall of past events. The subconscious quickly goes to areas of 'unfinished business', which can then be treated. When the cause is removed the symptoms disappear. People undergoing analysis often find it enjoyable and quite fascinating as a route to greater self-knowledge.

Two approaches are used: free association and direct regression. Therapy may take between 2 and 12 sessions, depending on the nature of the problem and which approach is used.

PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING

(That is, without hypnosis) may also be employed for a time when better results could be achieved by working with the conscious mind, or in the minority of cases where hypnosis is contraindicated.

ECLECTIC APPROACH

Many people benefit from a combination of some or all of the types of therapy described. Also, because of my broad and extensive knowledge base, I am able to make use of ideas and treatment methods from the entire field of psychology.

All the therapies have a profound effect on the way our problems, whether past, present or future, are both viewed and dealt with. A major re-evaluation takes place. They are also second to none as a route to greater self-knowledge, enabling us to become the person we were always meant to be.
