Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is a normal and natural method of altering someone's state of consciousness. It is very pleasant and relaxing - often you will be guided through beautiful and tranquil imagery. It is also at one with deep concentration. Generally one does not feel 'hypnotised' as such and, contrary to popular myth, you will not lose control. There is absolutely no question of being made to do anything against your will by using hypnosis. You do not go to sleep but will remain highly aware throughout the session.
Two characteristics of hypnosis are a heightened susceptibility to suggestion and a much improved memory.
Hypnotherapy, in short, is the combination of hypnosis with psychotherapy and counselling to bring about therapeutic change.
But why hypnotherapy over other kinds of psychological help? Most psychological treatments deal mainly with the conscious mind. But some problems are more deep rooted or the result of subconscious programming. It is the subconscious mind that stores past experiences, emotions and habits or responses that are no longer useful to us. Hypnotherapy is ideally suited for treating the subconscious mind. For this reason it can be successful where other therapies are not. It can also speed up the process dramatically.
The Health Education Authority has said: "Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for Hypnotherapy than any other Complementary Therapy...by using hypnosis people can perform prodigious feats of will-power and self-healing."
