Medical Conditions
Physical & Mental Illness
Hypnotherapy, psychotherapy or counselling are complementary to medicine. They are not a substitute for help you may get from your GP, a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
SEVERE DEPRESSION
If you are severely depressed or feeling suicidal please see your doctor as well as coming to see me. With your consent I may contact your doctor for advice. Once we start work you may begin to feel better quite quickly, but do not stop taking any medication without first discussing with your doctor.
PHYSICAL ILLNESS AND PAIN
If you have unexplained physical symptoms, please see your doctor first before coming to see me, in order to diagnose, treat or rule out any medical condition.
I may inform your doctor or seek written advice before continuing with therapy.
SERIOUS MENTAL CONDITIONS
Although hypnotherapy and counselling are a choice treatments for neurotic illness and all types of anxiety and psychological problems, they are not normally indicated for psychotic illness or personality disorders. These serious conditions require diagnosis and treatment under a psychiatrist (or mental health team) in the first instance. This does not mean that they cannot be helped, but that they first require psychiatric assessment and then should only be treated by a therapist or counsellor who has specific training in these conditions.
