Trauma & PTSD

A good definition of trauma would be any event that feels overwhelmingly frightening or upsetting, that you have little control over (you can’t solve, fight or escape), and that leaves you with lasting symptoms or limitations.

Trauma and the strategies we develop (unconsciously) to cope with it lead to chronic stress and multiple changes in the body, and is the hidden root cause of much mental and physical illness.

I can help you to get over trauma, whether it happened yesterday or decades ago. Counselling and hypnotherapy are ideally suited to resolve childhood trauma. I can help to free you from the toxic and limiting effects of the past to create the future you deserve.

Sometimes the word trauma is used to describe an event that was upsetting or stressful, but if your body and nervous system return to normal afterwards without long lasting effects it is not trauma. As Dr Gabor Maté has said: “Trauma is not what happens to you. It’s what happens inside of you. It is the wound you sustained…”

Sometimes trauma is caused by a once-off traumatic event. However there are other types of trauma that result from low level repetitive stress that may eventually feel normal but actually induces long term changes to your health and personality. Little ‘t’ trauma is sometimes used to describe poorly recognised trauma from such adverse conditions as lack of care in childhood.

The classic condition of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD includes one or more phobias but is also marked by flashbacks and recurring nightmares. The symptoms have an obvious cause in some situation that is recognizably traumatic. We are familiar with the classical causes of PTSD – war, natural disasters, accident scenes – but it can also be triggered by more personal events, such as rape, domestic abuse, personal assault or sudden illness.

The good news is that trauma can be effectively resolved, enabling your mind and body to function normally again. I am able to utilise a number of proven methods from counselling, hypnotherapy, regression and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to reverse the effects of trauma. Treatment is highly individualised depending on your experience and type of trauma. But in all cases what happened to you in the past need not dictate the future!
